What to consider when framing your view

So, you have finally bought that house of your dreams and are getting settled in. Maybe you have just purchased all new furniture, or maybe you have repainted and changed the color and design scheme in that space that needed updating. Everything is done… except the window treatments! How high should you mount the drapery rods? Would roman shades be better? How about roller shades, or maybe shutters?

All of these are great questions that are asked quite frequently. Window treatments can be considered an investment piece and often preserve the other real estate in a room. Here are some questions to consider when selecting window treatments.

What is my style?

Is your home full of traditional furniture and antiques? Draperies on decorative rods with ornate finials could be the right look for your home. Perhaps it has more of a modern vibe? Clean roller shades, Roman shades in bold geometrics or textured solids could look great, or shutters might be just the thing. Maybe you have a modern farmhouse style? Ripple fold or flat panels are trending. Whatever your style, there is a window treatment that will most certainly coordinate and complement.

What kind of window treatments would be best for my space?

The reality is, there are lots of options, and there may be more than one! During the consultation process, special attention is paid to your furnishings, decorating style, window size limitations, and lifestyle to help decide which style is right for each space.

Drapery panels help to focus the eye on the height of room. Roman shades require less fabric, and can provide light and temperature control, as well. You may opt for a valance or a cornice board to add a touch of softness to a window.

Other non-fabric options include solar roller shades in a wide variety of textures, colors, and designs. Beautiful woven wood shades in natural fibers, honeycomb blinds, wood or faux blinds, and wood or faux wood shutters. Ultimately it is a homeowners’ personal choice and is largely dependent on the allotted window treatment budget.

What do custom window treatments cost?

Perhaps the most important thing to consider when deciding on window treatments is your budget. Fabric will be the costliest part of any window treatment, with decorator fabrics starting at around $55.00/yd and up. Without a professional you could be making some costly mistakes. An average of $1500 to $5000 per wall is a safe estimate for custom window treatments in today’s economy. Consider them an investment that will truly make your house a home.
